At Active, we pride ourselves on taking an active role in making our community a better place to work, live and play. Our spirit of service is driven by our employees and championed enthusiastically at all levels of management. We support this spirit by offering every employee paid time off each year to volunteer in their community, as well as a matching funds program as an added gift.
Over the years, our employees have given their valuable time and energy to hundreds of local, national and global organizations that are most in line with our core values—spanning everything from basic living needs, to health & wellness, education, veterans, youth programs, and sustainability issues.
For the second year in a row, Matthew Del Re from Finance is leading a team of eight of his Marist College buddies to raise funds for the Movember Foundation under the name “The High Class Staches.” Movember is a yearly campaign
dedicated to raising money in support of research for men’s health issues during the month of November. These issues pertain specifically to Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, and Mental Health in Males and decreasing the rate of male suicide…..ending the stigma that men have to be “tough” and keep these issues hidden.
To raise awareness, many of the men post about men’s health issues on social media, and some run 60 miles in November to raise awareness to the 60 men lost to suicide every hour across the world. Movember is particularly known for men
growing facial hair in solidarity with the cause. Matt, says, “I think the one thing that surrounds Movember that makes people think it’s kinda silly, is a lot of guys will grow out a beard, a mustache, or have some sort of silly facial
hear—it kinda gets lost a little bit there [the message]….. the reason why we’re growing out facial hair and classy looking mustaches is to show support for being a man during a time when we’re raising money for mental health disorders….it’s a way to show support for the other men that are dealing with mental health disorders, or prostate cancer or testicular cancer… [it says] it’s ok to be a man and struggle.”
As the PTA President for Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Pearl River NY, Julie Phelan from Information Services, recently organized a Got Sneakers donation. Got Sneakers recycles old sneakers so they don’t wind up in landfills.
Wearable sneakers go to people in need and unwearable ones are upcycled into new products such as tracks, playgrounds, and other health & fitness related surfaces. The group collected over 100 pounds of sneakers for donation.
Kevin Foord of Suffern had a sudden cardiac arrest at 49 years old. His daughter learned CPR as a teenager and saved him. “It wasn’t a miracle,” he said, “it was CPR. Since then I have walked her down the aisle and become a grandfather
twice. I am one of the lucky ones.”
For the seventh consecutive year, Active will be teaming up with the American Heart Association & The Rockland Community Foundation to empower people to save lives. Heart of Champions is an annual golf fundraiser that takes place at the
Hudson National Golf Club in Croton, New York.
Funds raised will purchase CPR training kits for local schools in Rockland and Westchester. The kits empower students to learn the core skills of CPR in under thirty minutes. The kit contains everything a student needs to learn CPR, AED
skills, and choking relief for a classroom setting. The kits were developed for educators, school nurses, or even student leaders to train groups of ten students. The kits can also be used to train school faculty, staff, parents,
volunteer and community members to extend the lifesaving skills into the communities.
